Your Guide to Gutter Maintenance in the Fall

Fall is upon us! That means it’s time for changing leaves and cooler weather. It also means falling leaves and a little rain, which leads to clogged gutters. So what does fall look like for your gutters? How should you go about maintaining them over the next few months?

As we take a look at gutter maintenance, there’s a few things to focus on. When do gutters need to be cleaned? What does cleaning them really do for my home? And what can I do myself and what do I need to hire professionals for this season?

Let’s start with when. Cleaning your gutters as soon as leaves start hitting the ground is a good idea. If debris is left for too long and a rainstorm comes our way, it’s a recipe for a multitude of issues. You should have your gutters professionally cleaned about twice a year. Once in the spring and once in the fall (more during the fall if necessary). Doing a quick flush of your gutter system and downspouts is also a good idea before the winter freeze sets in.

Now why is it such a big deal to pay attention to your gutter maintenance? Well, cleaning your gutters prevents several issues. The most common problem is debris buildup, keeping water from flowing away from your roof. If water has nowhere to go, it will likely leak onto your roof and the exterior of your home. If you have holes or leaks anywhere, this could spell water damage to your home. Those same holes and leaks also have the potential to let critters into your home seeking a warm place to sleep.

Knowing what you can do yourself and what you should hire professionals for is imperative. Simply cleaning out your gutters is something you can do yourself if you take the correct safety precautions like having a stable ladder, wearing gloves, and letting someone know you will be up there in case of an emergency. Professionals should be called on to do a few things once or twice a year for a few things. Professionals should look for holes or leaks in your roof and gutter system as well as check the pitch (angle) of your gutters. The pitch is important, as if it has shifted, it may not be draining properly. You should also have the professionals check your fascia boards for any rot or deterioration. This could have an influence on the safety and strength of your gutters so it is important for it to be checked out.

Cleaning your gutters only needs to happen about twice a year, but it is good to have all the information before you climb the ladder.
